Nappiversary cont'd

So this Sunday I made a post about celebrating my one year anniversary of going natural. The internet connection that i was using[stealing] was acting super crazy so I couldn't really load pictures and things. So without further or do here is my journey to natural land.......

I'm gonna take a guess and say that I was about 5 years old in this picture. My hair was very thick and healthy at this point. Aint I just the cutest lil thing???

My hair was natural up until about eleven years old when my mother decided it would be easier to manage with a relaxer.The relaxer never really took so I always had to flat iron to get it straight. All it basically did was loosen the curl. I think that was my hairs way of telling me that it was never meant to be straight.

The next five pictures are me in high school(15 years old). As you can see my hair never really looked "relaxed".However it did start to break off at the ends from a combination of the relaxer and me pretty much not doing anything to it other than ponytails.

In 2006 i got a little bored with my hair and decided to sport a short cut. It was still relaxed but super cute. Here it is...

This is prom...same haircut but with added extensions.

I absolutely adored this haircut, but after three years I realized it was time for it to GO!! I always got asked what I would do with my hair after i got tired of my short cut. My reply was always "cut it all off and start over", but who have thought that's what I would actually do. At first I was a little skeptical because I didn't really know what I would do with it once it started to grow out. Just like before I really had no idea what to do with my hair other than throw it in a ponytail. Even with all the uncertainty I took a chance and decided to do the big chop. So on February 7, 2009 I went to Natural Trendsetters Hair Salon and had them chop it all off!!

Man I miss my nose ring!!

Going natural has truly been one of the best decisions I have ever made. People always say "its just hair" but going natural really did spill over into other areas in my life. I began to eat better, take better care of my body, my whole attitude changed about a lot of things. For once I felt like ME!!!....I wasn't hiding behind anything....I felt naked but in a good way...I felt free....liberated!!! It hasn't always been easy but I don't regret it one bit. In the beginning I was afraid of what people would say or think but I had to let all those things go and worry about how I felt...because in the end that's whats important. When i began to see that I was beautiful just the way I was others began to see it too. Yes I've gotten a few negative comments but they don't move me AT ALL. I'm exceptionally pleased with the person that I am so there is really nothing anybody can say to make me second guess my decision. I LOVEEEEEEE ME!!!! lol

Its been a whole year later and I am almost shocked at how much my hair has grown. Without the help of the natural online community I would have been a total wreck. In fact, I don't even think I would still be natural if it weren't for all the encouraging YouTube videos and natural hair blogs that were created to assist women in their journey. I just hope that I can be a source of encouragement to other women grappling with the decision to go natural.

Just a little quick update on the hairstyle from the previous post......
As I predicted before my hair broke out into a frizzy mess so I had to change it up a bit. I ended up just taking the twist down and wearing it out(twistout). The front is scrunched into a hump. Enjoy the pics.....gotta get back to writing this paper!!

Soooooooo as you may or may not know I really love watching hair videos on youtube. The other day I came across this video by youtuber BeautifulBrwnBabyDol , which I have included below. It looked pretty simple so I decided to try it today......

It didn't come out exactly like hers because my hair refused to scrunch up at the top. I ended up doing something slightly different, but I love it nonetheless!! Here are a few pics that I had a friend snap for me....

It wasn't til lookin' at this picture that I noticed my earring got missin' on me.....lol!!

The hair pin at the top is temporary.....just so its laying down tomorrow!! Lets see how long this hairstyle holds up. My hair is known to catch a "frizz attack" by the third or fourth day!!

Wow...its been like a million years since i posted!!! Shame on me....I really had intentions on being consistent with this blog, but I guess those intentions kinda fell by the waist side. I'm not entirely to blame though. My laptop is going through some serious growing pains right now......lol. Its not freakin working(story of my life). But aside from that all is well!! I'm trying to enjoy this break before the next semester starts. Its not exactly what I expected it to be ,but hey who's complaining. I absolutely hate living with other people....especially when the people I live with are absolute fckin pigs!! Growing up I used to hate when my mother made us wake up early every Saturday to clean up the house. I was convinced that every Friday night a demon took control of her body just to terrorize me and my sister the next morning.I was convinced that I was suffering a cruel and unusual punishment since nobody else I knew had to endure this every freakin weekend.While everybody looked forward to sleeping in late on their weekends I was dreading waking up to the smell of bleach and a deranged high yella black woman hovering over my bed.It wasn't til I moved out that I began to appreciate what my mother was trying to instill in me. This basic principle that I like to call "GET YO ASS UP CUZ U AINT GOT NO DAMN MAID SERVICE ROUND HERE" is a lesson that I think all kids(especially girls) should learn growing up. Maybe if my suitemates parents taught this course at home I wouldnt be here fuming over how nasty these heffas are.Not only have I been cleaning up after 3 other chicks but I have also had to add one of their boyfriends to the list of nasty ass kids. I don't understand how u cannot see the garbage spilling over or all the shit in the sink. I'm guessing when u got yo stankin ass up off the toilet seat you forgot that the little handle stickin' off to the side was there for you to FLUSH!!!Like really?? Did i miss the "dirty is the new clean" memo??

So yesterday I cleaned up everything(as usual)and posted this nice little note on the door. It reads as follows:

"Your habits are a reflection of you.... CLEAN UP AND PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF!!!

I also took the liberty of including a little picture of a maid with a caption that read "unfortunately we don't have one of these".
Lets just say that they were not to happy about that and we ended up having a house meeting because apparently some people's feelings were hurt(not that I care). So basically we now have a rotating schedule for cleaning. Lets see how long this last.

Anywho...tomorrow is my last day here before thanksgiving break.THANK U GOD!!!!! I get a break from this boring ass school and these nasty heffas(yea i said it...again)for a few days.Lord knows I need a break!!!

The White Beauty Myth

So a couple of days ago I stumbled upon this documentary on WSHH that kinda caught my attention. First of all any body who really knows me knows that I'm always interested in things race related especially when it has something to do with my people. This particular video, however,was a little troubling to me. Here we have three different people, all of different ethnic backgrounds who through one way or another wish to be more white. The one that hit home the most for me of course was the black woman. She basically equated all of her black features(wide nose andHAIR) to being low class, dirty, and ugly.Throughout the video all she kept saying is how she wanted a more "European look" so that she could fit into her more "European lifestyle".She felt that by getting a fckin nose job that all her problems as a BLACK WOMAN would be somehow magically wiped away with this WHITER, MORE BETTER NOSE!!I could rant on and on about how ridiculous and sad this video was...but I'm not. What i will say is I think its crazy that so many people feed into this euro centric idea of beauty. Then they turn around and conform to it. If you feel so bad about being put down because of your race why in the hell would u buy into it? Ur only passing on this self hate. Why change your nose, why bleach your skin, why? No matter what you do there will always be something else holding u back. U know what I say? I say fck any and everybody who tells me that there is something wrong with my kinky hair or my wide nose and full lips.Why the hell would I run myself broke and crazy by attempting to get a nose that the creator gave someone else when he/she equally gave me my own damn nose. I think its time that people start making there own definitions of what beauty is. Why would everybody wanna be the same? Why not celebrate the things that make us different...the things that make us beautiful and unique.

I also caught another episode of it today.This one is slightly different but it still deals with people feeling the need to conform to a more western or European look.

Unlike the first video I can somewhat empathize with the black woman in this video. I have a cousin who underwent the breast reduction surgery and just like this woman she had very large breast. My cousin decided to do it because she was having very bad back pains. However I don't understand why this lady kept mentioning Victoria Beckham. Honey both of u are at opposite extremes in the looks department. You will never look like her. There isn't enough plastic surgery in the world sweetheart. Be content with the reduction and happy with the life the creator gave you.
